About this site

One question, answered fast: is today a public holiday where you are?

What counts as a public holiday here

A nationwide day off set by law or government decree: banks, government offices and most workplaces closed. We do not list regional holidays that apply only to one state, province or city, religious observances that are not days off, or school holidays. When a holiday falls on a weekend and the country moves the day off to a weekday, the substitute day is listed and marked.

Where the dates come from

Dates are computed from the published holiday rules of each country (fixed dates, Easter-based dates, lunar and Islamic calendar dates, and substitution rules), compiled from government gazettes and official calendars by the open source date-holidays project, and reviewed by us. Islamic and some lunar holidays depend on moon sightings and can shift by a day; those are shown on their expected date. Governments also announce one-off holidays at short notice, which we add when they are confirmed.

Years covered and freshness

Years 2025 to 2028. The dataset was last compiled on 2026-10-17. Today's answer is calculated live in each country's capital time zone every time a page loads.

Time zones

Countries that span several time zones (the United States, Canada, Russia, Australia, Brazil and others) are checked in the capital's zone. Near midnight the answer can differ by an hour or two from your local clock.
